Green Vision

Environmental care has always been a priority to CEMAT, whose mission is promoting the Environmental protection through the development of combined transport.

Transport, along with its CO2-emissions into the atmosphere, is ever more closely related to the Environmental policies, since it represents one of the major sources of air pollution.

Reputable surveys demonstrated that the current emission levels are compromising the global ecological balance on our planet, thus causing damages, that could become irreparable unless the polluting emissions will drastically be reduced in the near future.

Among other things in the Kyoto Protocol of 1997 was stated the commitment undertaken by the European Union to reduce in the period 2008-2012 the emissions of polluting substances, such as CO2, by at least 8% in comparison with 1990 (this being the reference year). A few months before the above mentioned deadline, the EU is still far from reaching the targets set by the Protocol and transport, that in Europe is still being carried out mainly by road, is one of those industrial activities that is mostly contributing to the failure in achieving those goals. Moreover this sector is expected to grow considerably in Europe and for this reason it may seriously put at risk the achievement of the afore mentioned goals as far as the reduction of the greenhouse gas emission is concerned.

Since a drastic reduction of transport by road in Europe is hardly conceivable, promoting the employment of Environment-friendly transport modes seems to be the only possible solution to stem the negative Environmental effects of transport. Among these Environmentally friendly transport modes the rail freight - therefore the rail-road combined transport too -  is considered one of the best solutions ever.

For this reason CEMAT may well become a “key” to encourage a sustainable mobility of goods within Europe and to reduce the Environmental impact of transport. In fact, for years CEMAT has been committed in developing and promoting an efficient and Environmentally sustainable European network for rail freight on medium- and long-distance relations. CEMAT recently decided to undertake an initiative called “Green Vision”, aiming to raise the awareness of its customers and stakeholders upon the importance of choosing the rail-road combined transport instead of the transport by road in order to preserve our Environment.

For this reason CEMAT is glad to inform you that the following services are available on its website (www.cemat.it):

• In their own reserved area, our Customers may find a monthly report called “CO2-Saving Report” that enable them to quantify the CO2-emissions in Tons that they saved (even per single traffic relation) by entrusting their transports to CEMAT instead of carrying them out by road;
   
• In the home-page CEMAT’s Stakeholders may find the total quantity of CO2-emissions saved by transporting goods by means of the CEMAT’s services instead by road.
